What Happens When 5 Reiki Practitioners Go on a Retreat

A little background story: as much as life allows for I participate in a monthly Reiki Share.  For those who are unfamiliar, a Reiki Share is a gathering of Reiki practitioners to… drumroll…you guessed it…share, i.e.. give and receive Reiki. It’s all top secret and hush hush Reiki people only stuff. Well not really, at all, there’s a more to it naturally, but I’d conjecture that the nuances depend upon factors like who is participating, the space available and the facilitator/s. During the course of our meetings, we have created a lovely little bond and naturally that grew into the idea of nourishing this connection outside of our monthly shares as well, the baby steps to creating a beautiful community. From this was born our little get an away. One of our members took on the task of organizing the whole thing and boy did she deliver! She found the loveliest little cottage on a breathtaking piece of property, the poster child for calm, stillness and relaxation.

Now, when I say a retreat for Reiki Practitioners you may be imagining some structured spiritual based activities, regimented provided meals and one person running the whole show, and lots and lots of Reiki. What really happened? Perfect imperfection, connection and renewal! I can only speak for myself, but it was precisely what I needed without even knowing I needed it.

One of us had to drop out at the last minute, thanks to that pesky thing called work that likes to throw challenges at us sometimes. Two of us had to arrive later courtesy of other life happenings. The itinerary: open ended but we had some ideas. One of which was making use of the nice firepit, but Mother Nature has other ideas and promptly sends us rain. Meals were similar to a potluck style, but this doesn’t do them justice.

Most of us have a bunch of dietary restrictions, myself included, and if you’ve ever had to deal with that it is not always easy. In fact, I typically feel guilty putting pressure on others to deal with all the food items I can’t eat and try to bring something to at least contribute to the meal that I know is safe for me to eat. Ladies and gentlemen what we wound up with was uncanny, it was like being given puzzle pieces, all from different puzzles and yet somehow they fit perfectly together.  Dinner was a scrumptious soup of veggies and chicken as first course made by one person, second course came together with two of us brining yummy chicken meatloaf and spaghetti squash with tomato sauce, respectively and to finish off decadent brownies and chocolate chip banana bread. There might have also been some excellent red wine here and there. Breakfast came together just as magically, with fruit, yogurt, a quiche with the most surprising tofu and hummus (who knew those two worked so well?) and a very successfully fluffy frittata despite being dairy and gluten-free. My belly was full of nutritious food, and my soul was happy and my heart grateful for the thoughtfulness of the ladies surrounding me.

As for the other stuff, you may be surprised we did no Reiki on each other at all.  Instead, we filled the time with warm conversations, even warmer chai tea that hit just the right spot and a deeper connection.  Sure there were some moments where we spoke of spirituality, both on a deeply personal level and not, we even pulled some cards, but there were also conversations about the happenings in our lives currently and glimpses into our pasts all weaving into this tapestry of openness and ease, understanding and holding space for each other without maybe even knowing we were doing so. As we shared the lovely vista, stories and recipes, (you can’t have any, I’m hoarding them all…just kidding I’m happy to share at the end of this blog) and cleaned up for the next day and to leave to head back home I found myself feeling relaxed all the way to the core of my being, in a way that I have not in a while. I am grateful for the experience but most of all for the ladies who have made it so impactful.

The moral of the story? We often hear encouraging statements to make sure that you do things for yourself. “Take a little break,” “watch your favorite show,” “go for a walk,” but sometimes those are not enough.  Sometimes meeting up with a friend, indulging in a treat, doing your favorite thing is not enough.  There are times when you need a bigger thing to help you come back to your best self. It might take a change of scenery, deeper connections in unexpected ways, feeling like the only expectation of you is to just show up and be who you are in the moment, and some sacrifices on behalf of loved ones (no one back home had a good night’s sleep the one night I was away, not even our pets) to truly recharge on a deep and meaningful level and that’s ok.  I hope you, the reader get the opportunity to show up for yourself in a big way, in whatever way that is best and most meaningful for you.
